We Are Supernova is a practice-led postdoctoral research project in art, led by visual artist Dr Anne Haaning. It is hosted by the Department of Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, and funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions under Horizon Europe.

At a time of climate collapse, the project offers a new analysis of the forces of perpetual growth that drive it, by addressing a central paradox: our resource intensive technological desires and the ecological emergency they escalate.

In what ways might our expectations and understanding of these forces of growth and extraction be tied up with our technologies and the imaginaries they produce?

As an artist Im exploring this question through an inter-material method that discloses the hidden material narratives of the technologies I use in my practice. Silica a compound found both in exploding supernovae and in the silicon chips driving Al is central to this inter-material method as a metaphorical and material lens.

By superimposing cosmological acceleration with the techno-political accelerationism of Silicon Valley, the project sets up a speculative site for queering how the fields of science and technology discern the unknowable: the expansion of the universe and Artificial General Intelligence (AGi), for example.

I extend my investigation of the role of technology in my own practice to include technological practices in science, too. By bringing my experience with technological production into dialogue with astrophysics and cosmology, and informed by feminist Science and Technology Studies (STS), I am developing a model for inter-disciplinary knowledge exchange, where critical perspectives from the field of art, around image production, mediation, and representation, can contribute meaningfully to scientific discourse.

Through these collaborations and layered inter-material densities, a complex and materially inventive collection of artwork and research is emerging. Documentation will be posted here throughout the project duration.
